Cape Tribulation and Port Douglas

Tuesday, February 23rd. This morning, we have to meet at 7:55 am to take the bus of the agency which organizes the tour of 3 days on the Cap Tribulation. Steeve takes us friendly to the point of meeting, and we wait during almost 45 minutes for the bus. In fact, the bus stops in every hotel to take tourists. And necessarily, there is who take them time. As we are the last ones to be pick up, we accumulate all the delays, where from the 45 minutes of wait … It is impressive, the bus is filled practically only with girls, German or English for the greater part. Not very surprising here! We drive during a good moment, most of the time in the rain. The more we advance northward, the more we are surrounded by the forest, more exactly " rain forest ". It is a rather impressive lanscape, and the rain is only stressing the wet aspect of the forest. We stop one moment to make a tour on the Daintree River. It is a river full of crocodiles and the other animals, it is better to remain good in the boat! The guide approaches the edge to try to see crocodiles which would rest on the bank. He explains us at the same time all that there is to know about this river and the forest. During about twenty minutes spent on the boat, we see 3 small crocodiles. They are not very big, no more than the alligator which we held in Brazil, but it is cool to see them all the same. We take back then the bus which took advantage of our tour on the river to cross it aboard a ferry.

We drive again for a moment, then we stop right in the heart of the forest to make a walking of about fifteen minutes. The guide explains some small things quickly at the beginning, then he lets us walk quickly silently. Finally, anyway, we cannot too much deviate from the road because it is very moved and there are barriers on each side, certainly to protect the ecosystems. Anyway that does not very tempt to venture there, it is so wet; most of the time, there are at least 5 centimeters of water which recovers the ground. But it is interesting to walk here and to compare this forest with the Amazonian forest. Already, it is necessary much less warmly! And then the vegetation is rather different all the same; the fauna also probably. We cross 2 main types of ecosystems: we could say that the first one is the one that we find most of the time in the forest with a rather dense vegetation and trees rather big; the second is the mangrove swamp with a poorer vegetation. It is rather difficult to describe this environment when we do not know there too much, but what is impressive here there are all the small ends of roots which go out of ground. Surprising!

Once this small tour was finished, the bus takes us up to the Cape Tribulation, in the various reserved inns. On the road, we pass by a floodway (it is current in this period). The bus passes there relatively with no problem at all. We come down in " PK Jungle Village ", not too much far from the beach. Because what is impressive here, it is the sudden transition between the forest and the beach. Two different universes. We settle down in our dormitory and we settle to eat. The weather is depressing, it does not stop raining … Finally, we perceive a small calm then we take advantage of it to unwind a little legs and go on the beach. We walk about ten minutes in the forest, with the samelandscape as in the morning, but always so remarkable. The beach is beautiful, but even there that misses contrast without the sun. We walk all the same one moment the length. In this time of the year, we cannot bathe here because there are lots of jellyfishes, and also possibly sharks. We shall do without it … When we advanced well, the rain starts again falling, and we are very fast completely dipped! We try to pay attention on the camera so that it does not undergo the same fate as the first one, that would be it's a pity. We thus make about-turn by trying to shelter little under trees at the edge of the beach, but without too many results. Finally, when we arrive at the road to return in the inn, the rain stops … We spend the evening to be made of the computer and the other one on a table of the bar of the inn which plays some music completely, even if there is nobody. We have to be about twenty here! It is not really the season to visit Australia.

Wednesday, February 24th. This morning, always the same thing: it is raining. It is not really the ideal to have a walk. Finally, we try a first exit but it starts again raining, then we wait that it passes by glancing at stores close. When it stopped raining, we reattempt our chance, and this time, that seems to be the maid, we perceive even of the blue sky! We decide to go to the point of view of the Cap by taking the road. At the moment we have to cross a floodway. With flip-flop, it is not evident with the current! After around thirty minutes, we arrive at the point of view. We make a small bend by the beach " Cap Tribulation ", at the end of the Cap. It is not very big, but very attractive. We rise then to the point of view. Not too hard as gone up, we are there in 2 minutes. It is a little bit disappointing, we do not see much finally. We hoped to see the beach of our inn, very big but we see only an end of the beach " Cap Tribulation ". The rest is hidden by trees. We turn back and we try to find the road to return in the inn by the beach because it is nicer all the same than the road. The road crosses a moment by the forest. We like this vegetation, it is attractive, but we forgot to splash of anti-mosquito and as a result, we completely are bulged. We thus hurry to join the beach, and there, that already gets better, there are not mosquitoes anymore. We arrive at the end of the beach, and to continue, it is necessary to cross a river. We are going to suppose that it is not dangerous! We pass with caution, slowly not to fall because of the current. The water goes up us up to knees, but we arrive on the other side with no problem at all. Since we left, the sky had become covered, but there the sun returns again, and that returns the much more beautiful beach. And it is fast warm.

In the inn, we are made food then we take back the bus (which is still late) to leave in the other direction and go to Port Douglas. We cross back the floodway, then we stop in the point of view Mt Alexandra where from we can see among others the river Daintree throwing itself into the sea. It is very attractive from here, in spite of clouds. We have the right all the same for some sunbeams. It is better still like that! We take back then the bus until "Mossman Gorge". It is in fact a river in the middle of the forest, with big stones in the middle. It is a beautiful landscape. We can possibly bathe there, but there it is misadvised because of the height of the water and the current. Some make it all the same. Once this small finished tour, we take back the road to go directly to Port Douglas. Once over there, the guide leaves everybody in town, but us one stay one night furthermore here, thus we leave the group. The guide takes us to the beach, there where we have to meet Kevin the lad of Couch Surfing who accommodates us for night. He works as renter out of deckchairs and parasols there. That does not make him win a lot (he has another job close), but it is rather nice as working with this view! We stay one moment on the beach until he finishes, then we go to him. He lives in a house in collocation with a French guy, chef. We speak about a moment with Kevin, we eat with him then we spend the evening in front of the TV and the computer, and to listen to some Kevin's songs which he plays the guitar. Quiet evening!

Thursday, February 25th. Awakening gently. This morning, Anaïs leaves alone in town while Nadège stays in the room to make internet (and to speak with his boyfriend!). As the weather is beautiful this morning, Anaïs decides to go at once excessively point of view of Port Douglas. From there, there is a very beautiful view on the beach, it is magnificent. On the other hand, it warmly matched the rise right in the sun! Then, Anaïs takes another road to come down again, then she has a walk in the main street, where there are all the storekeepers. She finishes then her tour on the beach, where she settles one moment. Small bathing and making sunbath, that made for a long time! At 12:30 pm, we make an appointment both in front of the supermarket to buy of what to eat at noon. We buy to ourselves 2 pre-prepared salads then we join the beach. We eat in the shadow, in front of the sea. Nice as meal! We get closer then to the zone of authorized bathing. For here we do not bathe in the sea because of jellyfishes and crocodiles. So there is a small developed area (protected by a net) so we can make a little dip! Anyway, at this hour is the low tide and the area does not extend very far, it has water only waist. It bathes anyway minutes. The water here is super hot, it does not refreshed too! Back to towels to sunbathe a little. Nadège not stay very long in the sun because she did not want to burn out, and she left in the little point of view, at the end of the beach. Not far away, she is 10 minutes, but there is still also a very nice view from here. She left quietly towards the beach and stopped at a shower to wash, because the sea here is not very clean. She joined Anais on the beach but will put in the shade on the edge. Kevin asked him to sit on the couch next to his. Why not, it's more comfortable anyway! With music background, she talks a little, writing postcards. Finally, after a moment, Anaïs rises. Rather took the sun for today! We said goodbye to Kevin, thanking you for staying, then went home to pack up. It has an appointment at 16:30 with the bus agency (as yesterday) to the hostel just minutes away. We arrive on time, but eventually you have to wait almost 1 hour before we recover.

The bus takes us back to town and come back we look the other 20 minutes later. As we already know the city, there is no need to go in the store, and as it’s hot, we decided to buy something fresh. Anais wants to eat a smoothie, it's been so long! Nadege takes an ice-cream with three flavors. Very good and very refreshing! It resumed last bus that takes us back to Cairns. During the trip, the guide commented on the forest, seasons ... Then she spent a short documentary on the Barrier Reef. The sun set is while we roll, but unfortunately the wrong side of the bus, so we do not see well. There was even a rainbow in the sky! The bus drops us last, it is already 7.15pm. Just before we warned Steeve we arrive, and we offered to pick us up. It's not denial, thank you! With him, we rebuilt a gratin Dauphinois, because he keeps asking! Then before bed, we finished the movie we started waiting for the bus.
